Career Compass · Growing internally

You don’t want out. You want on.

Not every kind of restlessness is a reason to quit. Sometimes the company is right and only the role has grown too narrow. The Career Compass shows you, with reasons, which directions fit you — and translates them into lateral roles, specialist and management paths that actually exist around you. Module 1 starts right away and is free.

  • Module 1 free: 48 questions, ~8 minutes — your interest compass plus your best-matching career field, with reasons
  • Specialist or management track: the question answered properly instead of decided on gut feeling
  • A documented basis for your development conversation — with reasons drawn from your own answers

Sound familiar?

Growing internally rarely fails on willingness — it fails because nobody answers the question of where exactly. Let’s start there.

You’ve been doing the job in your sleep for years

Routine is comfortable, and at some point it’s a cage. The question isn’t whether you could do something else — it’s which direction would actually wake you up again.

Management is the only way up — allegedly

In a lot of companies, promotion into team lead is the only visible step. For some people that’s exactly right. For others it’s the fastest way to give up the thing they were good at. That decision deserves more than an org chart.

“So where do you want to develop?” — and you have 20 seconds

The question lands in your annual review, and a vague answer costs you the next round. With a reasoned result you walk in with a position instead of a feeling.

The internal posting reads like a foreign language — and might be a perfect fit

Roles in your own company often carry titles that say nothing about what you’d actually do. Once you know your direction, you recognise the right role even when the title hides it.

The six directions of your compass

Your compass has six directions — the interest dimensions of the RIASEC model. For growing internally the comparison is especially useful: it shows which of your directions your current role serves — and which one lies idle.

Practical-technical (Doer)

Building, fixing, working with your hands, being outdoors. If this stands out, roles close to production, engineering or field work are a better bet than the next meeting — often in the same company, just one department over.

Investigative-analytical (Thinker)

Understanding, analysing, cracking puzzles. This direction argues for the specialist track: expert, architect, analyst — roles with depth rather than headcount.

Artistic-creative (Maker)

Designing, expressing, creating something new. Here you find roles in product design, communications or concept work — fields where room to manoeuvre matters more than a rung on the ladder.

Social-supportive (Helper)

Supporting, explaining, moving people forward. This points to roles in training, enablement, people development or team leadership — wherever impact happens through others.

Enterprising-persuasive (Driver)

Persuading, leading, getting things moving. This is the classic management track, but also project leadership, sales or internal ventures — responsibility for direction, not just for tasks.

Organising-structured (Organiser)

Structuring, planning, keeping things running. This direction leads to roles in governance, quality, compliance or process management — where chaos turns into systems.

This is what your result looks like

You don’t have to buy blind: take a look at a real sample result for growing internally. Yours will grow exactly like this — module by module.

  • Your compass: your interest profile across all six directions — including the one your current role doesn’t serve
  • Career field cards with a match score, reasons backed by your own answers and one honest friction point — plus a wildcard that’s allowed to surprise you
  • Concrete occupations with the role names that also appear in internal postings
  • Routes for growing: lateral roles, and the specialist versus management track set cleanly side by side

What you get

No label and no personality prose — a result you can walk into your next development conversation with.

Your interest compass

From module 1: your profile across all six directions — free, together with your best-matching career field and a reason grounded in your own answers.

Career fields that explain themselves

With Premium: your top 3 fields with a match score, 2–3 reasons each drawn from your own scores (“Your strongest interest is … — this field runs on exactly that”) and one honest friction point. Plus a wildcard — deliberately labelled “might surprise you”.

Lateral roles, specialist or management path

Per field, real occupations with the role names used in your country, plus the routes for growing where you are: which sideways moves are realistic, and how the specialist and management tracks differ in that field. So you know what to ask for.

A journey that grows with you

Modules 2–4 (working style, values, self-image) sharpen your matching session by session — the journey bar tells you honestly what the next module actually improves. And your result comes as a PDF to keep.

How the Career Compass works

1

Get going — growing internally is already selected

All you tell us is your country, so role names and career tracks are the right ones. Then you answer the 48 questions of module 1: ~8 minutes, a 7-point scale, your first instinct counts.

2

We do the analysis

We analyse your answer pattern across all six interest directions and match it against our curated catalogue of career fields using fixed, traceable rules. Your compass and your best field including its reasoning are there immediately — free.

3

Deepen the journey

Modules 2–4 add working style, values and self-image. For the track question module 3 is the revealing one: it separates cleanly whether influence, depth or autonomy is what actually drives you.

Grounded in research: RIASEC — and what we built on top of it

The foundation is the RIASEC model developed by psychologist John Holland — one of the most thoroughly researched models in vocational psychology. Its core idea: job satisfaction emerges when interests and work environment fit together. That holds inside a single company too: two roles under the same roof can serve entirely different interests. Module 1 captures the six directions with 48 statements on a 7-point scale, modelled on the O*NET Interest Profiler.

The Career Compass builds a multi-stage journey on top: modules 2–4 add working style, work values and self-image. For the “specialist or management” question the values layer is decisive — influence, autonomy and technical depth pull in different directions, and anyone who doesn’t keep them apart easily picks the title over the work. Field matching runs against a curated catalogue using fixed, versioned rules; the same answers always lead to the same recommendation, and every recommendation backs its reasons with your own scores.

As its occupational vocabulary the Career Compass uses the European Commission’s ESCO classification — the EU’s multilingual reference for occupations and skills. That way your recommendations carry the names employers, career services and job boards actually use. And to be straight with you: the Career Compass offers orientation, not career counselling and not aptitude diagnostics. It shows you reasoned directions — deciding and setting off remains yours.

Frequently asked questions

It gives you the basis for answering it. Your interests show whether depth or impact through others pulls harder; module 3 then separates influence, autonomy and technical mastery cleanly. For every matching field your result sets the specialist and management paths side by side — including what you’d be giving up on each. The decision stays yours, but it’s no longer floating in a vacuum.

That’s exactly what this version is for. The routes layer of your result shows lateral roles and career tracks rather than strategies for applying elsewhere. Many people find that the direction they’re missing already exists in their own company — just under a title they’d never have searched for.

Module 1 (48 questions, ~8 minutes) is free — including your compass with your interest profile and your best-matching career field with one reason backed by your answers. Modules 2–4, the full top 3 fields with all reasons, the concrete occupations and the development routes are Premium: 7-day access for $1.95 (incl. VAT), then $39.95 every 4 weeks, cancel any time.

No. Your result is reachable only through your personal link, and you decide who gets it. If you like, take it as a PDF into your development conversation — but that’s your call, not ours. (If you’re taking the test through an employer’s company account, their rules apply; you’ll see that from the partner logo.)

No — and it isn’t meant to. It offers orientation: a reasoned map of your interests, fields and routes — not career counselling and not aptitude diagnostics. But for a conversation with your manager, people development or a coach, your result is the best basis you can bring along.

Once a year, ideally before your development conversation, is plenty. Interests shift slowly — working style and values, on the other hand, do change, for instance after a role change or a reorganisation. Because the same answers always produce the same result, a comparison shows you immediately what has genuinely moved.

Staying isn’t a decision against growth. Not if you know where to.
